Kelsey, Harry
Yale University Press 8/11/98 0300071825 First Hardcover New - First Edition w/full number line
In this lively biography, Harry Kelsey shatters the legend of Sir Francis Drake. Drawing on much new evidence, he replaces the familiar image of a pious, brave, and just seaman with a more interesting picture of an amoral privateer at least as interested in lining his pockets with Spanish booty as in forwarding the political goals of his country

Kenyon, Jane

out-of-print and rare to find in new condition

Kenyon ( The Boat of Quiet Hours ) portrays with meticulous detail the healing, regenerative force of nature in the cycles of human emotion and experience. Her understated, deceptively simple poems celebrate the pleasures of domestic, rural life--waking, walking the dog, wash day are here occasions for meditations on the natural world and the joys of ordinary existence: All afternoon I lifted oak leaves / from the flowerbeds and greeted / like friends the green-white crowns / of perennials. . . . How I hated to come in!

914 Rhodes and Rhodesia [Hardcover] by Keppel-Jones, Arthur
Keppel-Jones, Arthur
McGill-Queens University Press 11/1/83 0773505342 Hardcover Very Good - no writing or marks in text - structural integrity is excellent - dust jacket moderate wear to edges & corners
This volume deals with the conquest and colonization of Zimbabwe and the establishment of Southern Rhodesia, from the beginnings of British involvement in Bechuanaland to the death of Cecil Rhodes. Its emphasis is on the white invaders and its chief concern is white individuals, their motives, actions, and influence on events. The British South Africa Company and the irregularity of its financial and political operations are dealt with in detail. Keppel-Jones also discusses the development in the midst of the indigenous population of an alien white society and state, from their crude beginnings to their emergence in a form still recognizable today. The reader is led to conclude that by 1902 Southern Rhodesia was already set on the road that would lead to the upheavals of the second half of the twentieth-century.The author examines the racial consciousness and prejudice of the white society and addresses an important question: why did the imperial government grant a royal charter to the BSA Company? The facts show conclusively that the imperial government had little interest in Central Africa or care for its fate except when foreign competition appeared.Keppel-Jones also reveals the important role played by black troops employed by the Company in suppressing the rebellions of 1896-7.For opposite reasons, neither blacks nor whites have been willing to recognize this; on the other hand the habit of the 'men-on-the-spot' of making and carrying out decisions without regard to their superiors in London is a commonplace of imperial history. One of the main themes of the book is the tension between the unofficial imperialists, straining at the leash, and the Colonial Office, struggling to hold them back. Rhodes and Rhodesia is based on extensive use of public records, mainly in the Public Record Office, London, and the National Archives of Zimbabwe, of collections of private papers, and of contemporary published works. Arthur Keppel-Jones is professor emeritus of history at Queen's University.

922 Indigenous Psychologies: Research and Experience in Cultural Context (Cross Cultural Research and Methodology)
Kim, Uichol (Editor)
Sage Publications, Inc August-93 0803951418 Hardcover New

"This edited volume instills new vigour into psychology as it calls for the legitimation of indigenous models. The editors have done a masterful job, bringing together so many different contributors, all deeply devoted to the specificity of psychology in their home country, as well as respectful of scientific foundations." --Transcultural Psychiatric Research Review "Any psychologist who has wondered about the place of culture in psychology or questioned the applicability of Western research results to 'different' social and cultural contexts will find much food for thought in this edited volume. . . . Perusal of the book offers many and diverse answers to the question, 'What are indigenous psychologies?' . . . The chapters are written at a level most suitable for social sciences professionals, graduate students, and other researchers who are interested in including 'culture' and cultural groupings in their work. The volume deserves our attention because it speaks about a significant trend in psychology as formulated by some of the researchers who are helping to launch it." --Gui-Young Hong, review in World Psychology "Psychology" has traditionally meant Western psychology, using the assumption that human universals hold true for humankind because they hold in Western society. But psychology, as practiced in other parts of the world, raises an alternative view of human behavior. Indeed, human universals are problematic, and need to be revealed through an examination of multiple indigenous psychologies in order to establish comparisons between cultures. In Indigenous Psychologies the native contributors of 14 different cultures present aspects of their own indigenous psychology, showing the diversity and wealth of psychological knowledge that can be obtained from attention to indigenous research traditions. Their collective message is clear: Western scholars need to rethink the premises of their discipline and discover how a universal psychology can be attained. An important volume that helps form the basis for cross-indigenous psychology, Indigenous Psychologies is necessary reading for professionals and students of psychology, cross-cultural research, cultural studies, and anthropology.

926 Dine and Die on the Danube Express: A Gourmet Detective Mystery by King, Peter
King, Peter
St. Martin's Minotaur 6/10/03 0312283660 Hardcover New - general inscription and autographed by author - Stated First Edition
King (Eat, Drink and Be Buried, etc.) delivers mixed results in the seventh outing for his Gourmet Detective, this time aboard a luxury train. The journey begins in Munich, winds its way through the Alps, with stops in Austria, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia, the final destination being the Black Sea coast of Romania. The passengers sample the best of each locale's cuisine, while the Gourmet Detective observes the workings of the high-class excursion. Before long his reputation as an amateur sleuth, albeit one who's worked with the pros of Scotland Yard, gets him involved in the disappearance of a glamorous Hungarian actress. Has she been abducted from the train? Has she been murdered? Or is it some bizarre publicity stunt? Then a body turns up and things get even stranger. As the Gourmet Detective and the head of security work to stop the killer from striking again, the train moves forward more smoothly than the plot. An engaging travelogue and the good food, evoked in the attractive jacket art, compensate only partly for stilted prose and an unconvincing mystery that feels grafted on. Comparisons to Agatha Christie's classic Murder on the Orient Express are inevitable, but King's novel limps along a distant second.

930 Understanding Trauma: Integrating Biological, Clinical, and Cultural Perspect...
Kirmayer, Laurence J. (Editor)
Cambridge University Press 1/15/07 0521854288 Hardcover Good - There are some pages with underlined sentences; sporadic throughout book - structural integrity is very good - dust jacket shows some rubbing and edges show bumping
This book analyzes the individual and collective experience of and response to trauma from a wide range of perspectives including basic neuroscience, clinical science, and cultural anthropology. Each perspective presents critical and creative challenges to the other. The first section reviews the effects of early life stress on the development of neural systems and vulnerability to persistent effects of trauma. The second section of the book reviews a wide range of clinical approaches to the treatment of the effects of trauma. The final section of the book presents cultural analyses of personal, social, and political responses to massive trauma and genocidal events in a variety of societies. This work goes well beyond the neurobiological models of conditioned fear and clinical syndrome of post-traumatic stress disorder to examine how massive traumatic events affect the whole fabric of a society, calling forth collective responses of resilience and moral transformation.

Kiste, John Van Der
Alan Sutton Publishing, Ltd. 2/1/98 0750913215 Hardcover Like New - moderate marks on back of dust jacket; else, brand new
Often derided as the buffoon who hated all boets and bainters, George II was fortunate to be served by Prime Ministers Sir Robert Walpole and William Pitt, and was wise enough to leave the business of government to them. His wife, generally regarded as the ablest of British queens between Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, used her influence in politics and patronage so that she and Walpole effectively ruled the kingdom between them. Her death in 1737 was seen as a national calamity. Illustrated throughout, this new biography provides a much-needed reevaluation of these monarchs and the times in which they ruled.

939 Lincoln's Critics: The Copperheads of the North

Out-of-Print and nearly impossible to find - Like New book in a VG+ jacket - Book itself is unmarked and near-mint. Jacket shows mild rubbing to spine and very mild bumping to top edge - dust jacket preserved and protected with Brodart, non-adhesive clear jacket cover

Klement (1908^-94) was the premier historian of Lincoln's opponents in the North, dubbed Copperheads by Republicans to connote poisonousness and stealth. Klement corralled his major professional papers and some previously unpublished articles in this, his last book, to create "in essence, a Copperhead Bible." From delving in archives throughout Copperhead country--the Midwest, then called the Northwest--Klement came to see the Copperheads as victims of a bad rap. Virtually all Democrats, they had valid complaints about the war's devastating early effects on their region's economy and the Lincoln administration's abuse of Constitutional rights. Their fears about emancipation, though exacerbated by racism, were basically economic--workers, especially Irish and German immigrants, feared losing jobs to free blacks. Republican propaganda, backed up by military bullying, undermined the Copperheads' credibility, and their support dwindled when the Northwest economy changed from depression to boom as the war dragged on. Klement blamed nationalist mythologizing about Lincoln for obscuring the complicated truth about the Copperheads. Although not organized into a smooth, continuous narrative, these articles tell an utterly fascinating story. Ray Olson

The Zulu War of 1879 was devastating in its brutality. Pitting the firepower of the professional British army against the skill and determination of King Cetshwayo's Zulu warriors, it was a mighty clash of military cultures that ended with the collapse of Zululand - the last great black kingdom bordering Britain's African colonies. This book traces the course of the Zulu War, covering the major battles of Rorke's Drift, Isandlwana and Khambula, and showing that the British victory was by no means easily won

This most sophisticated form of organized life on earth is still in the trial and error phase of its development. It seeks to outgrow the myth-directed era of its history and come to its final state, the ration-directed human society.

970 Bears Dancing in the Northern Air (Yale Series of Younger Poets)
Kyle, Christiane Jacox
Yale University Press 5/22/1991 0300050070 Hardcover New
Mild ding on jacket at top of spine; else, brand new book - First Edition Copy

Christiane Jacox Kyle's Bears Dancing in the Northern Air, the winning volume in the 1990 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, was selected from among 725 entries in this annual competition. 'What matters to me in these poems is the dramatic and startling way our daily lives belong to this world, the way moments, days, years carry some reminder of a larger universe. In the Old Testament, pride and despair are the twin poles of illusion marking when the people have lost their way-pride when they see themselves larger than life, despair when too insignificant, a thing apart. Both are mitigated in the wilderness, where their voice listens and is heard on earth and in the heavens.'

977 Lonesome Dove
Larry McMurtry
Simon & Schuster 1985 0671504207 Hardcover New New
Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless--McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities--but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction

978 True North: A Novel of the Underground Railroad
Lasky, Kathryn
Scholastic 8/1/96 0590205234 First Edition Hardcover New
Stated First Printing

Lasky (The Night Journey) again combines suspenseful fiction with history as she intersects the lives of two 19th-century adolescent girls: Afrika, a run-away slave from a Virginia plantation, and Lucy, a restless young socialite from Boston. While Afrika travels the Underground Railroad, dodging slave catchers and their hounds, Lucy prepares for her sister's upcoming wedding to a prominent New Yorker even though she would rather be helping her grandfather with his abolitionist efforts. The paths of the two girls converge when Lucy discovers Afrika hiding in her grandfather's house after "Pap" has died from a stroke. Together, the two girls embark on a dangerous journey to the Canadian border. Both Afrika and Lucy are, from the beginning, admirable, likable heroines, but the true colors of other characters are not revealed until long after the girls' daring trip. Lasky clearly illustrates the tyranny of slave masters, the support of slave labor in the North, the restrictions placed on 19th-century women and the philosophies of such revolutionaries as Robert Gould Shaw, Abigail Adams and Ralph Waldo Emerson (each of whom plays a minor role in this riveting drama). Telling her story with sensitivity and flair, the author amply fulfills the goal she states in an afterword: to write "within the structures of logic and judicious imagination

984 The Conservative Revolution: The Movement That Remade America
Lee Edwards
Free Press 1999 0684835002 Hardcover New Near-Fine
An unabashedly ideological political history by a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation. You would think that only people living under rocks for the last 20 years would be surprised to learn of conservative strength in recent American politics and that this success obviates the need for paranoia about liberal influence, but Edwards (Goldwater: The Man Who Made a Revolution, 1995, etc.) disagrees. In his view, liberal biases have prevented recognition of the triumph of conservatism, and he is out to set the record straight. His presentation is colored throughout by the assumption that politics is a battle of good (conservatives) vs. evil (liberals), with predictable results. Consider negative political campaigns, for example. Lyndon Johnson's ads attacking Barry Goldwater are denounced with the comment that for Johnson ``extremism in the pursuit of the presidency was no vice''; George Bush's ads attacking Michael Dukakis are praised as ``the most effective negative ads in presidential campaigning since the Democrats in 1964,'' with the Willie Horton ads downplayed as the work of an independent PAC. The loose chronological organization features three conservative heroes, Robert Taft, Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan, and a host of lesser figures, ranging from Joseph McCarthy to Newt Gingrich. Throughout the discussion, the critical steps in building the coalition that eventually put Reagan in the White House are noted, with no hint that there might be tensions between, for example, Goldwater's commitment to individual freedom and the moral agenda of social conservatives. The question that is addressed is whether or not conservative critics of government can govern effectively when in positions of leadership, and Edwards's answer is, of course, yes. However, citing the strong record of conservative governors administering state governments leaves hanging the question of conservative leadership in Washington and constitutes a rather weak conclusion. Readers who share Edwards's assumptions and dislike subtle analyses that might challenge them will find this book an enjoyable read and an essential history of recent American politics.

991 Photographs Annie Leibovitz 1970-1990
Leibovitz, Annie, 1949-
HarperCollins Publishers Oct-91 0060166088 Hardcover New Glassine - Fine, as new
*** STATED FIRST EDITION **** Rare, out-of-print copy of Ms. Leibovitz' classic book of photographs - Nearly impossible to find in brand new condition - Would make a wonderful gift - Will deliver via USPS Priority Mail.

Leibowitz did many of these 242 photo-portraits (one-third of them in color) for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair , yet others included here are previously unpublished. Posed shots and fanzine fare alternate with more penetrating character studies. Norman Mailer, Hugh Hefner, Tennessee Williams, Susan Sontag, Mikhail Baryshnikov and an utterly pretentious Ivana and Donald Trump hide nothing from her gaze. Some pictures are tacky (Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold mud-wrestling), some are blah (Philip Glass, Dennis Hopper), some are kitsch (seductive Bette Midler festooned with roses). A few are symbolical, such as the one of ferocious, body-painted Keith Haring looking like one of his own artistic creations. Snaps of John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Rickie Lee Jones will please rock fans. Vistas like Highway 101, California or the glimpse of Nixon leaving the White House by helicopter after his resignation seem to define a time and place.

997 Living in Balance: A Dynamic Approach for Creating Harmony & Wholeness in a C...
Levey, Joel
Conari Press 1/1/98 157324032X Paperback New
Cofounders of InnerWork Technologies, the authors give seminars on stress management and mind/body health to corporate, medical, sports and government organizations. Beginning with the idea that dynamic balance seems to be a central organizing principle of every living system in the universe, the Leveys teach readers to live in balance and wholeness despite the pressures of today's world. They stress the balancing of rest and activity, as well as attention to self and to others, to the universal and the personal (or inner and outer worlds), and stillness and motion. Their material is presented attractively and written clearly, mixing breathing and visualization exercises with theory that the authors have broken down into understandable, memorable charts and lists that highlight their most important points. The Leveys coin the apt term learningful to describe the zone of optimal performance, where working toward challenging goals is balanced with rest and recovery, and where the extreme danger zones of burnout and rustout are avoided. Applying their quest for balance to areas including mind, body, spirit, emotions, family, work and community, the authors offer a helpful guide for walking the tightrope of daily life
