805 Scotty Bowman: A Life in Hockey
Hunter, Douglas
Triumph Books Dec-98 1572433124 Hardcover New
First Edition / First Printing

Scotty Bowman: A Life in Hockey traces the career of one of hockey's most intriguing characters. His success has been offset by a career rife with controversy. Known as an icy taskmaster, he can be a ruthless manipulator with a cruel streak. Others view him as a brilliant strategist, who continuously studies the game and who has attracted his share of loyalists among players of past and present. Frequently garnering respect over admiration, Bowman is often hated and loathed by the legion of players who have toiled under his reign.

Every aspect of Bowman's roller-coaster career is highlighted, from his early playing career through his seven Stanley Cup victories. From the thrilling years with the Montreal Canadiens to the difficult years with the Buffalo Sabres, Doug Hunter (author of Champions and A Breed Apart) chronicles both the joyous victories and the disappointing upsets.

809 The Oxford Companion to World War II The Oxford Companion to World War II
I.C.B Dear
Oxford University Press 1995 0198662254 Hardcover New Near-Fine
The definitive single-volume reference work for students of World War II, I. C. B. Dear's 1,400-page compendium provides a wealth of detail on matters that standard histories often gloss over or pass over altogether. For example, Dear covers the Night and Fog Decree, which called for the execution of any civilians committing crimes against German forces in occupied territories, as well as the Battle of the Courland Peninsula, in which Red Army soldiers overwhelmed the last German forces in the Baltic and seized Latvia and Lithuania for the Soviet Union. This is a fine book to browse through while watching Bataan or The Longest Day, or to have on hand to provide background material for other World War II-related reading.

810 Crisis Leadership: Planning for the Unthinkable
Ian I Mitroff
John Wiley & Sons 2003 0471229180 Paperback New N/A
From product defects to environmental disasters--almost every day a new corporate crisis hits the headlines. In the majority of cases the results are disastrous: costly and time-consuming efforts to establish a positive public image can be wiped out in seconds. The inadequate, and often damaging, response of American business to such adversity proves that we don't need better crisis management--we need crisis leadership. Ian Mitroff offers a new proactive approach that focuses on doing everything humanly possible to prevent crisis before they happen, rather than merely putting the best possible spin on the aftermath. In easy-to-read, accessible language, Mitroff presents the critical, key lessons that will help managers lead the organization through a major crisis.

812 Lenin's Embalmers
Ilya Zbarsky, Samuel Hutchinson
Harvill Press 1860465153 First English Translation Hardcover New New
Out-of-print, very rare, FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION EDITION of this title - brand new

On January 21, 1924, just three months after Joseph Stalin spoke those words, Vladimir Lenin died. Trotsky, already falling from favor, argued that turning Lenin's remains into a relic ran counter to Lenin's own beliefs. Eager to strengthen his new regime, however, Stalin saw that preserving the body was a good way to harness the religious sentiment of the nation's masses for his support. The Committee for Immortalization was duly founded, and--after much debate--scientists Vladimir Vorbiov, Boris Zbarsky, and their assistants were selected to embalm the great leader. Lenin had been dead for two months before they were able to begin working in a laboratory housed inside Lenin's mausoleum in Red Square. Despite constant refrigeration and tentative preservation attempts, the body had deteriorated--"the left hand was turning a greenish-grey colour; the ears had crumpled up completely." Vorbiov developed a successful solution of glycerin, alcohol, water, potassium acetate, and quinine chloride, which restored the body to a lifelike appearance and is still used for preventive maintenance today.

Boris's son Ilya Zbarsky recounts this strange history and his family's experiences in Lenin's Embalmers. Technical details regarding the embalming process are interspersed amongst stories about Lenin, moving the body during World War II, and even traveling abroad to embalm other Communist heads of state. Zbarsky also reveals the political infighting that dogged the scientists, and how, even in the shadow of Lenin's mausoleum, it was impossible to hide from Stalin's purges. Finally, Zbarsky brings the book to its ironic conclusion: when their funding was cut by 80 percent, the mausoleum's scientists began embalming the former Soviet Union's nouveaux riches to support Lenin's upkeep. Full of interesting detail--and remarkable photos--Lenin's Embalmers makes for an engaging read.

Mention of Lenin and corpses might indicate intrigue and topics of dark fascination. However, this vanilla account of Soviet life doesn't quite plumb the depths. Zbarsky was a member of the nomenklatura, and his privilege stemmed from a job in the world's most famous mausoleum. It was the author's father, Boris Zbarsky, who was in charge of the mausoleum; Ilya had a supporting role as a chemist, ensuring that Lenin did not spoil. While Zbarsky's account might resemble that of any Moscow pensioner, his employment did offer ringside seats for the Stalinist show trials in the 1930s. Although he skims over what could have been interesting personal detail (a competitive relationship between the young scientist and his playboy careerist father; the antipathy between the young man and his stepmother), Zbarsky shines when it comes to corpse preservation: he recounts the evacuation of Lenin's body to Siberia during WWII and includes a chapter focusing on the process used to preserve the leader of the World Proletariat. Zbarsky's personal relationship with the corpse ended in the 1950s, when he was dismissed from his post. The institute responsible for Lenin's upkeep later embalmed the leaders of several other Socialist countries (including Klement Gottwald, head of the Czech Communist Party, and Ho Chi Minh), and today the mausoleum laboratory provides mortuary services to all paying customers, including the Russian mafia. Offering little new information on the mysteries behind Lenin's tomb, the book will prove most interesting to those curious about Communist worship of their leaders' remains.

816 The Barmaid's Brain: And Other Strange Tales from Science [Paperback]
Ingram, Jay
W. H. Freeman 11/06/01 0716747022 Paperback New - Out-of-Print and RARE title to find in NEW condition
How can a waitress's brain allow her to remember every drink order at a table but be unable to know that the surface of beer in a tilted glass remains horizontal? Are the earliest human ancestors primates or aquatic mammals? Can mutant genes ever be beneficial? Canadian science writer Ingram (The Science of Everyday Life, etc.) examines these and other mysteries in this lively collection. He shows that science most often does not arrive at its conclusions through any straightforward method of hypothesis and experimentation. Instead, science involves a series of fits and starts as it probes the human psyche, the world of microbes and electrons, and the behavior of animals, often suggesting along the way different answers to the same question. For example, some scientists contend that male moths are attracted to candles because the infrared radiation of the burning wick feels similar to the infrared radiation that female moths produce in their sexual pheromone. Other scientists argue that once upon a time moths used moonlight to guide their nocturnal flights and that now, confusing porch lights with moonlight, they naturally fly to the first glow they see. In a story about microbiology, Ingram explains how being a carrier for cystic fibrosis--that is, having a mutant gene--may offer protection against cholera in the same way that being a carrier for sickle cell anemia provides protection against malaria. Finally, he discusses the aquatic ape theory of evolution, which holds that our lack of body hair, our subcutaneous fat and our ability to hold our breath argue for a marine, rather than a terrestrial, evolutionary ancestry. In these humorous and winning tales, Ingram displays a genuine wonder for the world around him; pop science fans will enjoy following these entertaining investigations.

At the height of the O. J. frenzy in 1994, California-based criminologists self-published a short pamphlet trying to inform the media about DNA testing and typing. When they realized that mostly lawyers were buying it, they expanded it to include legal aspects. The 1997 first edition of the published volume was expanded again to gather forensic DNA analysts into the readership net. In the second edition, they acknowledge short tandem repeat (STR) typing as the current system of choice, and emphasize the growing importance of DNA databases. General readers should find here a better understanding of the process as well as some technical material they can skip

819 Many Thousands Gone: The First Two Centuries of Slavery in North America
Ira Berlin
Belknap Press 1998 0674810929 First Hardcover New New
When Americans look at slavery, they conjure up images of tired black bodies picking cotton from sunup to sundown under Southern skies. That image is partly true, but, as the noted history professor Ira Berlin details, the lives of slaves in America's racist system were complex and diverse. "Viewing slavery through the perspective of what slaves did most of the time," Berlin writes, "provides a means to draw some fundamental distinctions and find some essential commonalities among the various experiences of North America." Berlin reveals the color-caste codes of the Afro-Creoles of the Chesapeake, the survival of African culture in the South Carolina-Georgia-Florida coastal area, and the intermingling of Africans with French and Spanish in the Mississippi Delta area. He weaves a woeful and wondrous tale of the mores, occupations, conflicts, wars, and rebellions that made up the ongoing relationships between masters and slaves. Many Thousands Gone is an excellent companion to Philip D. Morgan's Slave Counterpoint, revealing the influence the "peculiar institution" of slavery had on those of African and European descent alike.

The history of slavery in North America is not as simple, clear-cut or tidy as is often believed. That is the message of this impeccably presented history of American slavery from 1619, when John Rolfe brought "twenty Negars" to the Jamestown colony, to the 1820s, when the spirit of emancipation began to take hold in the North. Berlin, a history professor at the University of Maryland, shows how at different times and at different places, slavery was a very different thing. He makes a great distinction, for example, between slave societies such as the Carolina low country in the 17th century (in which both the economy and the social structure was built upon slavery) and societies with slaves (the lower Mississippi of the same era) where slavery was only part of a more complex structure. He shows how slavery was different for those born in the West Indies, Africa and North America, and for those serving in urban settings (which encouraged a certain entrepreneurial spirit) and in rural. These distinctions have continuing resonance, as Berlin shows that once a society with slaves became a slave society, all blacks?free or not?could come to be regarded as slaves: in short, how an economic system became racism. Although the prose is serviceable more than anything else, the book holds many surprises gleaned from the facts, whether in its portrait of New York as a major slave city or its descriptions of free enterprise at work among slaves. The economic and historical research presented here is impressive. But what gives the book an additional dimension is its deftly employed social insights.

820 Neo-Conservatism: Selected Essays 1949-1995
Irving Kristol
Free Press 1995 0028740211 First, First Printing Hardcover New New
This fascinating book by one of America's leading public intellectuals spans nearly half a century of writing, with essays on sex, politics, and religion. Irving Kristol has long been considered the godfather of neoconservatism, a political persuasion that breathed intellectual life into the moribund Republican Party during the 1970s and helped make Ronald Reagan's ascendancy possible. But because Kristol spent the bulk of his career in the highbrow journalistic world of essays and commentary, he never authored a full book that defines his mode of thinking or traces its development. This collection of essays is the closest thing there is, and it's a real treat: smart, often counterintuitive, and full of good writing. As Kristol notes on the opening pages, "An intellectual who didn't write struck me as only half an intellectual." And Kristol is clearly a full intellectual. Much of the writing here has appeared elsewhere--in Commentary, where Kristol served as an editor; The Wall Street Journal, where he regularly contributes to the op-ed page; and The Public Interest, which he founded and still edits. The best part of the book, however, is an original essay, "An Autobiographical Memoir." In it, Kristol sketches his intellectual growth, which began while he was a young man attending neo-Trotskyite meetings in Brooklyn (where he met his wife, the historian Gertrude Himmelfarb) and eventually took him to Washington, D.C., where today he is a fixture at right-of-center political gatherings. For readers interested in conservative politics, Neoconservatism is a keeper.

This hefty collection of some 40 articles and essays written since the 1950s represents a kind of summation for neocon doyen Kristol, editor of the Public Interest. Particularly interesting is his previously unpublished opening memoir concerning influences such as Lionel Trilling, Leo Strauss and army life as well as the founding of his magazine and his work with the American Enterprise Institute to extend conservatism beyond free enterprise to reflect "on the roots of social and cultural stability." The articles are a varied lot. Some denigrate such topics as multiculturalism and the "consumers' protection movement" or declare that the 1960s counterculture was essentially unprovoked. More compelling essays reflect on the "true purposes" of the American Revolution, the 1960s growth of the "new class" and the "perverse consequences" of Great Society programs that ignored universal applicability. Kristol also includes several essays on Jews in America and on the country's latter-day shift to conservatism.

823 Why Read the Classics?
Italo Cavino
Pantheon 1999 0679415246 First American Edition Hardcover New New
Why read Italo Calvino's book on the classics? Because it passes his own test for what a classic is, and its brisk prose can blast your concept of the word clean of the dusty associations that cling to it. Calvino gives 14 offbeat definitions of classic, my favorite being "a work which constantly generates a pulviscular cloud of critical discourse around it, but which always shakes the particles off." His sharp essays on Conrad, Dickens, Diderot, Flaubert, Ovid, and others constitute an act of self-criticism too, a novelist's imaginative autobiography. In 1955, when rave-reviewing Robinson Crusoe, he called Daniel Defoe the "inventor of modern journalism." In 1954, he overcame his disgust with Hemingway's life "of violent tourism," coolly assessed his dry heights and sodden depths, and called himself Papa's apprentice. And the 1984 piece on Borges shows who influenced Calvino most once he'd become a master himself.

From both the American and the Argentinian, Calvino learned to be concise, and his quick sketches of books like the "unqualified masterpiece" Our Mutual Friend provide a contact high--one wants to drop everything and head straight to a library, so infectious is his enthusiasm. "How many young people will be smitten" by Stendhal's recently, brilliantly retranslated Waterloo-era adventure The Charterhouse of Parma, he writes, "recognizing it as the novel they had always wanted to read... the benchmark for all the other novels they will read in later life." Like a great teacher, Italo Calvino distills a writer's essence in a vivid phrase: money, for instance, serves as "the motive force of Balzac's narrative, the true test of feeling in Dickens; but in Mark Twain money is a game of mirrors, causing vertigo over a void."

826 The Road to Terror: Stalin and the Self-Destruction of the Bolsheviks, 1932-1939
J. Arch Getty
Yale 1999  Biography: general First Hardcover New New
This documentary collection, continuing Yale's pioneering Annals of Communism series, tackles questions surrounding the paroxysm of the purges in 1937^-38. One thing Stalin had was a long memory, and the hitherto mysterious Riutin Platform (the contents here at last seeing the light) must have rankled him. The platform was a 1932 call by Bolshevik veterans to remove him. The course culminating in the extirpation of all opposition was complex, and the authors' commentary underscores that a politics of sorts continued up to the point when full-blown terror was unleashed, a politics that pitted the central apparatus of Stalin and his associates in Moscow against the regional party bosses. The authors track one such Stalinist's fate in detail, as they do that of Bukharin, Stalin's opponent in the 1920s. The 200 documents here will astonish anyone familiar with the era, yet it is a specialized tome whose public library appeal could be checked against the circulation stats for the indubitably popular Who Killed Kirov

832 On The Edge of Nowhere
James Huntington, Lawrence Elliott
Epicenter Press 2002 0970849338 Trade Paperback New
His father is a white trapper, his mother an Athabascan Indian who walks a thousand miles in winter to reunite with her family. Thus, Jimmy Huntington learns early how to survive on the land. When his mother dies, Huntington-at age seven-must care for his younger siblings.

A courageous and inspiring man, Huntington hunts wolves, fights bears, survives close calls too numerous to mention, and becomes a championship sled-dog racer.

On the Edge of Nowhere is an enduring Alaska classic, still "tingling with excitement." Jimmy Huntington's memoir is being republished in a handsome new third edition to which photographs have been added.

Lawrence Elliott, who has written several books and numerous magazine articles, was Reader's Digest correspondent for Alaska and western Canada when this story was written in the mid-1960s. Elliott now lives in France.

842 ON THE BRINK: The Dramatic Behind the Scenes Saga of the Reagan Era and the Men and Women Who Won the Cold War
Jay Wink
Simon & Schuster 1996 0684809826 First Hardcover Like New Very Good
First Edition Copy / Full Number Line - Like new book in a VG jacket - jacket shows mild bumping to edges

The thesis that President Ronald Reagan's administration, through its embrace of military confrontation and brinksmanship, hastened the breakup of the Soviet Union and decisively won the Cold War for the U.S. receives a fresh twist in Winik's intensely dramatic, personal narrative history. He credits four members of the Reagan team, all renegade Democrats, with translating the President's hard-line policy into effective diplomacy. The four are Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle, arms control negotiator, supporter of Star Wars and of the deployment of nuclear missiles in Europe; Jeane Kirkpatrick, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; human rights advocate Max Kampelman; and Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams. Drawing on more than 200 interviews with key participants, private papers, classified documents and memos of conversations, Winik, a professor at the University of Maryland's School of Public Affairs, also provides close-ups of Carter, Mondale, Kissinger, Caspar Weinberger, George Schultz, Paul Nitze and others. His engrossing book is certain to fuel debate.

851 When We Were Wolves: Stories
John Billman
Random House 1999 0375502580 Stated First Hardcover New New
The way Jon Billman writes it, Hams Fork, Wyoming, is a kind of latter-day Cicely, Alaska. You remember Cicely, the fictional town at the heart of TV's Northern Exposure? Hams Fork, the rough-and-tumble setting for most of the stories in Billman's first collection, gives it a run for its money in sheer volume of crazy artists, tough-talking schoolteachers, and plain old ornery cusses. This is a town where painting a rainbow-hued bare-chested mermaid on the water tower in the middle of the night qualifies as a major event. In Hams Fork, the men are boys, and are they ever bored. They chase away their boredom with drinking and adultery and doing stupid things in the wilderness.

Billman knows his terrain: his obvious first-hand experience of his characters' more esoteric pastimes--firefighting, mead-making, dogsled racing--makes for an abundance of satisfying detail. And gear fetishists will find passages hand-fashioned for their consumption: "The sled was beautiful, in the same linear way that antique gun stocks, oak letter desks, old saddles, bamboo fly rods, handmade cowboy boots, beavertail snowshoes, and wooden skies are beautiful." Billman's writing lets out a lonesome cowboy yowl that seems written expressly to the escapist fantasy specs of the city-bound dude. He's a Pam Houston for boys.

As handily as Billman pulls off his portrait of a Western town, he has set out to do more: to limn the rootlessness and loneliness of the modern-day West itself. One character "has ridden Hams Fork to exhaustion. Just up and leaving is acceptable, expected in the West." But the author's chin-scratching search for meaning seldom yields more than the most hackneyed revelations. A little less of this predictable angst and a little more of his (very evident) comedic talents would have made this fine book a first-class read.

Humans have always been explorers. This hefty compendium of exploration lore accounts for all these quests and more, with more than 100 maps and 300 photographs and drawings to liven the discussion. Full of details, The Oxford Atlas of Exploration is a fact-finder's dream. Alexander the Great, we learn, took his army through 20,000 miles of hostile territory; Marco Polo reveled in trout fishing; Lewis and Clark passed their first winter on the Pacific Coast reading by the light of candles made from a beached whale. 861 Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down
Johnson, Kaylene
Epicenter Press 8-Apr 0979047080 Hardcover New
First Edition Hardcover

Senator John McCain electrified the nation by tapping the relative unknown Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in the 2008 U.S. presidential election--and overnight, she’s become the candidate everyone’s talking about. But who is Sarah Palin--this conservative politician, family advocate, hockey mom, and moose-hunter who may well make history as the first female vice president? In Sarah, the first biography of Palin, author Kaylene Johnson draws upon personal interviews with Palin, her family, and closely placed sources to explore her family life, her upbringing in a devoutly Christian home, her political rise, and how she went from being a long-shot candidate to--potentially--one of the world’s most powerful women and political figures.

871 The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road
Jools Holland, Dora Loewenstein
Studio  1998 0670880515 First (full number line) Hardcover New Near-Fine
The daughter of the band's longtime manager has put together an exclusive life story, complete with 1000 photographs.

This is the Rolling Stones' official story of life on the road, their home away from home for over thirty years, created with the exclusive cooperation of the band, their management, and a select few of their closest colleagues. The Rolling Stones--Mick, Keith, Charlie, Ron, Bill--tell their story in an incredibly candid first-person account which is complemented by hundreds of rare photographs. For this major project, the Stones looked to Dora Loewenstein, the daughter of their business manager, Prince Rupert Loewenstein. Having virtually grown up with them, she enjoys their confidence and support and has been entrusted to present their touring history, from its beginning in 196263 at small, local gigs, to their infamous world tours, culminating with their 199798 Bridges to Babylon tour. In a vivid text, based on extensive interviews conducted by Jools Holland, the Stones reminisce and comment on their experiences, the music, and the relationships which give the band its unique and enduring personality. The Stones' sidemen, such as sax player Bobby Keys, and long-term associates also add their stories to the mix. The dazzling array of photographs are drawn from the Stones' own archives and from untapped collections throughout the world. The Rolling Stones: A Life on the Road is the story, quite simply, of the greatest rock-and-roll band in the world doing what they do best.

875 Zombie
Joyce Carol Oates
Dutton 1995 0525940456 First Hardcover New New
First Edition Copy

A hero who gets into the mind of a serial killer is a fixture of television crime shows, but such stories are usually disappointing, because the viewer knows it's just a gimmick. Not so with this unusual little novel, which The New York Times called a "note-perfect, horror-comic ventriloquization of a half-bright, infantile serial killer." Joyce Carol Oates has so convincingly written through the voice of a killer, you will feel nervous while reading at how familiar, how human, he is. Part of how she achieves the effect is through sparing use of bizarre capitalization (e.g., "MOON" and "FRAGMENT") and crude drawings done with a felt-tip pen. But the language is what makes it come alive, as in such weird statements as "My whole body is a numb tongue." This book was winner of the 1996 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel.

Kafka, Franz
Knopf Publishing Group Feb-98 0805241183 Hardcover Fine - As New
out-of-print and rare to find in new condition

One of three unfinished novels left after Kafka's death, The Castle is in many ways the writer's most enduring and influential work. In Harman's muscular translation, Kafka's text seems more modern than ever, the words tumbling over one another, the sentences separated only by commas. Harman's version also ends the same way as Kafka's original manuscript--that is, in mid-sentence: "She held out her trembling hand to K. and had him sit down beside her, she spoke with great difficulty, it was difficult to understand her, but what she said--." For anyone used to reading Kafka in his artificially complete form, the effect is extraordinary;

889 The Shadow of the Sun
Kapuscinski, Ryszard
Knopf 17-Apr-01 0679454918 Hardcover New
out-of-print and rare to find a new copy

This book encompasses many African countries which the author visits. The trip you feel you are taking along with him not only informs you about things perhaps you never knew existed, the conditions under which they live, the culture as it really is, but he is able to interject into some of the hairy experiences, humor and makes you laugh. While the overall content of the book is not meant to be humorous, he manages to find certain moments and lighten up the feeling you get of being mentally drained, tired and physically depleted. In the end, just like travelling to another country, you finish the book with a different, more informed perspective.

891 Real Estate Education Throughout the World: Past, Present and Future
Karl-Werner Schulte (
Springer 2001 079237553X  First Hasrdcover New Not Issued
In recent years, growing attention has been focussed on real estate education. The objective of Real Estate Education Throughout The World: Past, Present and Future is to document the current status and perspectives of real estate education and the underlying research throughout the world. The intent is to inform students, academics and practitioners about the situation in the widest possible range of countries and to provide a foundation for the future of the real estate discipline. The structure of this monograph follows the organisation of the world-wide network of real estate societies. In Part 1, Stephen E. Roulac sets the framework for the other contributions. Part 2 contains 20 chapters that examine real estate education in Europe. Part 3 consists of two articles covering North America.

Part 4 includes two chapters dealing with Latin America. In Part 5, 8 countries in Asia are examined. Part 6 contains two chapters covering the Pacific Rim. Finally, Part 7 focuses on Africa.

This collection of papers is unique, in the sense that 50 authors have contributed to the monograph and 37 countries or regions in total are covered. The editor does not know of any comparable book.

name in "presented to" area; else, unmarked and in very nice condition

I have used several Bibles and translations over the years, and fell in love with this one the first time I saw it. While marketed as a teen study Bible in my local Christian book store, I have found it to be one of the best study bibles that I have ever worked with. The questions in the Margins are relevant and thought provoking.
