Shoes: Their History in Words and Pictures [Hardcover] by Yue, Charlotte Yue, Charlotte Houghton Mifflin Books for Children 4/28/97 0395726670 / 9780395726679 Hardcover New - Out-of-Print and RARE to find a copy in NEW condition Many books have appeared recently reviewing the history of shoes. This book stands apart by taking a more chronological approach, from the earliest rope sandals, through the popular styles of Rome, the medieval world and on into the twentieth century. The interplay of politics and footwear is fascinating, from the royal decrees concerning acceptable styles to the excesses of the French court. Marie Antoinette predated Imelda Marcos in amassing an enormous wardrobe of shoes; she required an index to keep track of them all. I was smugly pleased to learn that the early American colonists eschewed the foppish styles popular in Europe at the time. The book does not limit the text to European styles; the impact of Asian trade routes on world fashion is also discussed. Throughout, black and white illustrations clarify the text-this was the first time I truly understood the function of a form of shoe protection called a patten, as a drawing of a patten and shoe appears below the paragraph describing them. A thorough bibliography and complete index are included Price:
